How RevPASF is calculated.
The definitions, the arithmetic, the tier thresholds, and the honest limits of the early benchmark data.
Revenue over activated square feet over active hours.
A per-event figure (revenue ÷ activated square feet) is useful for a single activation, but it is not comparable across a 4-hour market and a 40-hour retail week. Dividing by active hours normalizes time, which is what makes RevPASF comparable across venue types.
What counts, and what does not.
Gross sales attributable to the activation: onsite transactions, pre-orders fulfilled onsite, and orders placed onsite. Brand lift and later online sales are real value but sit outside the core metric so the number stays auditable.
Only the footprint the activation actually occupies and works from, including the customer-facing apron in front of the table. Not the venue's total square footage, and not aisle space shared with everyone else.
Customer-facing hours only. Setup, breakdown, and dark hours are excluded, because counting them penalizes elaborate activations that earn more once the doors open.
Why $0.17 per square foot per hour.
Typical US mall retail runs roughly $325 in sales per square foot per year. Spread across about 12 hours a day, 360 days a year, that is approximately $0.075 per square foot per hour on total leased footprint. Comparing on selling-floor square footage rather than gross leasable area moves the figure to roughly $0.17 per square foot per hour. We use the more conservative $0.17 as the comparison baseline so RevPASF multiples are understated rather than inflated.
Thresholds are multiples of the baseline.
Tier boundaries are not arbitrary. Each is a round multiple of the $0.17 baseline, chosen so the number a vendor reads is memorable and the jump between tiers is meaningful rather than statistical noise.
| Tier | RevPASF / hr | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Warming Up | Under $0.50/hr | Below 3× mall retail. Active, but the space is not paying for itself yet. |
| Working Space | $0.50 – $1.00/hr | 3× to 6× mall retail. The activation is earning its footprint. |
| Market Mover | $1.00 – $2.00/hr | 6× to 12× mall retail. Repeatable, bookable performance. |
| High Performer | $2.00 – $3.00/hr | 12× to 18× mall retail. Venues should compete for this vendor. |
| Rainmaker | $3.00/hr and above | 18× mall retail and up. Document the conditions and repeat them. |
Where the venue-type ranges come from.
The published ranges are directional. They are drawn from early fayVen activations and structured operator interviews, then widened to reflect the spread we actually observed rather than the midpoint we would like to report. They are not underwriting guidance, and they will move as the dataset grows.
- Market & Festival Booth$0.75 – $2.50/hr
- Retail Shop-in-Shop$0.60 – $2.00/hr
- Hotel Lobby Activation$0.50 – $1.75/hr
- Brewery & Taproom Pop-Up$0.40 – $1.50/hr
- Vacant Storefront$1.00 – $3.00/hr
What this data cannot tell you yet.
There is no national database of pop-up performance, so no figure on this site is a census. Sample sizes per venue type are small, self-reported revenue is not audited, and seasonality is not yet controlled for. Treat RevPASF today as a shared yardstick for comparing your own activations to each other, and as a directional reference against peers. As reported activations accumulate, the ranges tighten and the standard gets stronger.
